Red, green, blue, purple, yellow - Erika, Willi and their three boys have a uniquely colorful home. They converted an old barn on Erika's parents' property themselves. The young family was very bold when it came to the color scheme. It had long been Erika's dream to convert an old barn or a loft. She always envisioned a combination of old and modern. After the death of her father in 2019, the family decided to move near her mother. There was still an old barn on the family property that they wanted to convert. Little did they know at the time that the extension and renovation would take four years. The young family looked for creative support for their conversion project and asked an architect friend. He and his colleagues from the Piertzovanis-Töws office in Basel immediately saw the potential of the old, dilapidated barn. Their idea: instead of building walls, they wanted to place small, self-contained houses in the large, open space. They also suggested working a lot with color. Willi and Erika agreed to the color experiment. To keep costs down, the couple wanted to do as much of the conversion work themselves as possible. The architectural firm helped with detailed building instructions, but the entire conversion took four years, during which Erika and Willi invested all their free time in the barn conversion. Erika is actually a physiotherapist, Willi works as a project manager - so neither of them are experts when it comes to manual work. The construction and painting work they did themselves was therefore a feat of strength for the whole family, but it was the only way they could realize their dream home. They were finally able to move in in the fall of 2023. Erika and Willi love the “house in house” concept. The colorful little houses with extravagant colors are their rooms. The bedroom is very special, where they have installed a whirlpool and a projector with a screen. Another original feature is the hole in the ceiling of the laundry room, which provides a direct link to the children's area. The children's dirty laundry can be thrown out of the room directly in front of the washing machine. Very practical. Overall, Erika and Willi have made sure that the design is very child-friendly for their three sons. Erika and Willi have not regretted their courage in the color scheme. Even if they were initially sceptical about some of the color suggestions, such as the bedroom, which was completely in dark blue. They now love the very special atmosphere created by the different colors. As the family was not allowed to install a solar heating system due to the listed building status, they use pellet heating. The underfloor heating also provides warmth. And if that's not enough, the fireplace is turned on. An insulating wall with 180 millimeters of insulation is built up against the interior wall. The roof is covered with 240 millimeters of over-rafter insulation. The floor is insulated and compacted and stuffed in such a way that the cold bridges have been minimized as much as possible. The family says that this was not entirely possible due to the half-timbering and the old beams, but that it is nice and warm even at sub-zero temperatures. Erika's mother also lives on the property, where the barn is located, as do three of her siblings with their partners and children. One of the brothers is currently extending another building, which is also on the property and even has a mill wheel in it - incidentally, he is using the same architect.
