Not all 19th-century clocks whispered from parlor mantels; some commanded a room, and none did so more effectively than the E. Howard & Company Model 70. Introduced around 1890, the Model 70 became the Standard School Clock of Boston and New York. The U.S. Government later designated it as the official “Standard for all Public Buildings.” You could find it in railroad stations across the United States, Mexico, and Canada — from the New York Elevated to the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Boston & Albany. The Model 70 was available in five dial sizes, ranging from 12 inches to 24 inches. This example, featuring a rare 14-inch dial, strikes a perfect balance between size and collectibility. The cherry case showcases a warm, original surface with deep patina. A wooden bezel frames a zinc dial, signed in Howard’s distinctive block letters. The reverse-painted lower tablet, decorated in black, red, and gold, remains in excellent condition. Inside, the eight-day brass movement—with polished steel pinions and a damascened pendulum bob—retains the accuracy for which Howard was renowned, keeping time within a minute per month. Even the cast-iron weight, stamped “70,” remains original. Measuring 36 inches in height and only 5 inches deep, the Model 70 was designed to fit seamlessly into public spaces while providing reliable timekeeping. Today, once-frequent examples have become rare, making this 14-inch dial version especially appealing to collectors. Dimensions: Length 36", Width 18", Depth 5" Inventory # 225096
