The Octavia MK319 has the same capsule design as the MK-219 primary with some very distinct differences that we review. The Case and The Grille. On the MK319 the first difference you will notice is that the case and the grille are different. The new design was developed to cut down on the sound refractions. The new MK319 delivers a smoother sound then ever with a lot less distortions and background hiss. We found that you get a nice open sound with depth. Other Improvements. On the MK319 the switches have been improved and the internal wiring is a bit longer on the 319 compared to its predecessor. The front diaphragm is Teflon that has been treated with gold. The rear diagphram does not have the gold treatment. The capsule is covered in a resonator disk and an acoustic equalizer that improves the capsules responses to different frequency. Are Mods Necessary? You may have come across some studio microphone reviews about the Oktavia 319 and learned about some Oktavia 319 mods. While some engineers and producers feel the need to make the mods like caulking inside the body or replacing the Fret, we found that those mods are not really necessary. Sure if you want to upgrade and install higher end resistors than have at it but you should know that right out of the box you will get a sound that you will enjoy from this mic. Mods and upgrades are really at the discretion of the producer and what he/she prefers for their studio environment but that should be misconstrued to mean that it is something that “must” be done to get the sound out of this mic that you want. A Little History. You may even read some of the top condenser microphone reviews and read that the 319 has a dark sound to it but keep in mind that the 319 is modeled after the K47, which put wooly and dark on the map when it came to sound. We also want to mention that you should not judge a book by its cover. Yes the price point is right on, but that does not mean that you are getting a cheap imitation of a K47, it means you are getting a great value on this “clone” like model. The original K47 is German made while the Oktavia is Russian in origin but there are so many closely related similarities that it is hard to tell the difference between the two during a blind “hearing” comparison. This was a great mic for all the instruments that we tested it with , when it came to vocals it did a decent job but it worked best for those smoky voices. It captured the darkness just like it is supposed to. With a little tweaking we could brighten it up. As a matter of fact, we do not really think it fails in any arena as long as you have a gifted producer and engineer hanging around. Overall. We like the price, we like the functions, we like the sound. What else can we say about it? Don’t listen to the mod hype, you do not have to have the confidence to modify this mic to get what you need out of it.
