This is the extraordinary true story of Gquma (Bessie), a young English castaway who became a revered queen of the Mpondo people in 18th century South Africa. Around 1736, seven-year-old Bessie survived a shipwreck on the treacherous Wild Coast and was adopted by the AbeLungu clan, who named her "Gquma" (The Roar of the Sea). She later married Tshomane, son of Mpondo Chief Mathayi of the amaTshomane, and after his death, married his successor Sango. As Great Wife and queen, she wielded unprecedented influence in Mpondo society. The Mpondo clan of abeLungu traces its ancestry to Gquma, whose bloodline flows through many noble families today. She had several children, including her son Mdepa and daughter Bessy. Gquma's remarkable life came to an end in 1808 in Mngazana, but her legacy as a bridge between cultures lives on. This is the story of cultural integration that colonial authorities tried to suppress - a testament to how different peoples could not only coexist but thrive together in pre-colonial Africa.
