With addictive melodic hooks and a commitment to funky, danceable beats, VC’s become a crowd favorite at local haunts like Johnny Brenda’s and the Kimmel Center’s Sittin’ In series, while opening for fusion giants like The Robert Glasper Experiment and also becoming the go-to band for touring vocalists looking for killer local backing—think Grammy winner Chrisette Michele, nine-time Grammy nominee Kelly Price and Gamble and Huff and Branford Marsalis-alum Frank McComb. Founded by trumpeter Chris Stevens (who’s also heard frequently on cornet, flugelhorn, and electric valve instrument [EVI]), VC’s core group is rounded out by Brandon Mullen on drums, Don Stevens on bass, Walt Nash on percussion, Phil Collier on keyboards and synthesizer, and Jordan Damiani on electric guitar. But guests abound, both at live performances and on their four records to date, including but not limited to Stevens’ wife, vocalist Shaylah Stevens. VC made their recorded debut in 2011 with aRe, a five-song EP probing the borders shared by contemporary jazz, funk, R&B, and indie rock. Bright Side of Midnight and After Midnight followed in 2014 and 2017, respectively, adding vocalists Chartel Findlater and Sheila Moser and exciting young instrumentalists like saxophonists Korey Riker and Sam Greenfield. Greenfield returns for an extended run on VC’s latest, The Future is Bright (2018), where he’s joined by guests like electric guitarist Simon Martinez, flutist Katisse Buckingham, pianist Brandon Young and Grammy-nominated vocalist and frequent VC collaborator Eric Roberson, for whom VC memorably opened in 2014. The Future is Bright is VC’s cleanest, most refined, most intentional session yet.
