The Dark Story of The Getty Estate | The Fortress That Couldn't Save Them On a January morning in 1974, above the traffic of 17985 Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades, a long marble pool lies still. The new Getty Villa, commissioned in 1968 and modeled on the buried Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum, has opened as J. Paul Getty's museum of antiquities, though its founder remains at Sutton Place in Surrey. Architects Robert E. Langdon Jr. and Ernest C. Wilson Jr. have translated excavated plans into travertine colonnades and stucco walls, each imported stone a line in a ledger, each bronze door a calculation. In the museum's founding papers, Getty's charge that it serves "the diffusion of artistic and general knowledge" hangs over every gallery. Light moves across the water; the villa feels less like a home than a treasury, a fortress for gold. A year earlier, a grandson's ear arrived in the post. The building is finished. The family is not.
