Labour faced fresh questions at PMQs over what critics describe as another policy reversal, after stepping back from plans linked to compulsory digital ID checks for work. Kemi Badenoch welcomed the shift, arguing the proposal was poorly thought through and highlighting wider concerns about the government’s consistency. She also referenced comments from the Health Secretary suggesting the Prime Minister should focus on “getting it right first time”, pressing Sir Keir Starmer on whether he agreed. Starmer insisted his government remains committed to tightening right-to-work enforcement, saying checks would be digital and mandatory. However, rather than addressing the specifics of the change, he largely used his response to attack the Conservatives’ record in office and their internal instability, culminating in a remark intended to underline what he portrayed as their lack of consistency. Julia Hartley-Brewer, Peter Cardwell and former Tory adviser Claire Pearsall review PMQs. Have you got a story?
