For story suggestions please contact tips@nma.com.tw The United States has moved a sophisticated radar system to waters nearer the North Korean coast in order to more closely monitor possible missile launches. The Sea-based X-band Radar - or SBX-1 - mobile radar system, a key part of the US ballistic missile defence shield, had until now been deployed off Alaska's isolated Adak Island in the Behring Sea. The massive self-propelled platform is based on a semi-submersible oil drilling rig and its design allows it to roam over the Pacific Ocean in nearly any weather. Its new deployment comes after the US last month staged staged B-2 stealth and B-52 heavy bomber exercises over South Korea in a show of force aimed at warning the North against further provocation and at reassuring its East Asian allies. This animation introduces the SBX-1 system and explains its role in the US missile defense shield.
