THE WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN - RTW S6 EP14 The Burt Munro Challenge in Invercargill, New Zealand is one of the most famous motorcycle events in the world, celebrating the legendary rider behind The World’s Fastest Indian. Every year thousands of riders travel to Southland to experience the races, the bikes, and the story of Burt Munro, the man who set land speed records on his modified 1920 Indian Scout. Often described as New Zealand’s answer to major motorcycle festivals like the ABR Festival (Adventure Bike Rider Festival) in the UK, the Burt Munro Challenge brings riders together for several days of racing, rides and celebrations of motorcycle culture across Southland. In this episode of our round-the-world motorcycle journey we travel to Invercargill in New Zealand’s South Island to experience the full Burt Munro Rally, from the adrenaline-filled Burt Munro hill climb races to the famous Oreti Beach motorcycle races, where riders race along the same stretch of sand where Burt Munro once tested his machines. Watching motorcycles race along Oreti Beach with the ocean beside them is one of the most unique motorsport events anywhere in the world. We also visit Motorcycle Mecca in Invercargill, widely considered one of the greatest motorcycle museums on the planet. Inside we explore the incredible John Britten exhibition, showcasing the revolutionary Britten V1000, one of the most innovative racing motorcycles ever built and one of New Zealand’s greatest engineering achievements. This episode is part of our round-the-world motorcycle adventure. Two hundred days ago we left the UK with everything we owned strapped to one motorcycle, our BMW R1300 GSA, and began riding around the world two-up. Since then we’ve crossed continents, deserts, mountain ranges and more than two dozen countries carrying everything we need on the same bike. New Zealand is the latest stage of that journey, and the Burt Munro Challenge is one of the most iconic motorcycle events anywhere on Earth. If you’re planning a New Zealand motorcycle trip, South Island road trip, motorcycle tour of New Zealand, or visiting the Burt Munro Challenge in Invercargill, this episode shows why riders from all over the world travel here to experience it. The story of Burt Munro became famous around the world through the film The World’s Fastest Indian, starring Anthony Hopkins, which tells the true story of the New Zealand rider who spent decades modifying his Indian Scout motorcycle before travelling to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to chase land speed records. Munro eventually set a land speed record of 184 mph (296 km/h) for under 1000cc motorcycles in 1967, a record that stood for decades and secured his place in motorcycling history. Today the Burt Munro Challenge motorcycle festival in Invercargill celebrates that same spirit of innovation and determination that made Burt Munro a global motorcycle legend. Follow the journey as we continue riding around the world on our BMW R1300 GSA. 🛒 Our Travel Shop: Explore our travel-tested gear & stickers: https://seanandemilytravels.com/shop 🗺️ Navigation App – calimoto: Get a 30-day free trial ➤ Use code: S&E30 Get 10% off yearly plans ➤ Use code: S&E10 Start here: https://linktr.ee/calimoto_SeanandEmily 🛟 Travel Safety – Protected by Global Rescue: Worldwide emergency rescue, evacuation, and medical support for overlanders:
