Cathy sharing her level of outness as polyamorous and bisexual. 9/2016 More at: http://theopenphotoproject.com/tagged... Cathy: I think I tailor it a little bit, being I’m an engineer at a big company. It’s kind of hard being a female engineer some days. It’s so much better than it was but there’s so much little things and it’s standing up for yourself. I’ve shared with people that I’m close to at work that I trust, that I’m bisexual and might have unconventional relationships, and a few of them know I’m at a catalyst right now, for example. But most of them have no clue. I think because I’m a woman of size that a lot of them just assume that because I don’t talk about dating, that I don’t date. And I didn’t date for fourteen years because I’m bigger. At 320 pounds, people don’t generally think people date, but whatever size you are you can be sexual and there’s plenty of amazing people out there that want to date amazing people so it doesn’t matter. In my work community, I tend to be somewhat discreet. If the right person comes along and I feel that they’re safe, I’ll tell them, but I also don’t want to traumatize people. If you go up to some people and you’re like, “hey, I’m queer and poly!” They’re like [inhale], and I don’t want to add distress. Interviewer: That’s an interesting way of looking at it. The coming out to someone, the timing of it being considerate and consensual to the person you’re coming out to. Cathy: Yeah, so I try to be respectful of that. It’s not always important for people at work to know that about me. In my couching field, I’m quite out. I have YouTube videos that talk about being poly and queer and being at play parties. I talked about that at Body. My family, they know that I’ve dated women. I don’t really share a lot about it because, again, they just don’t want to know. As far as I can tell it’s not very comfortable for them, except for a few chosen people. Interviewer: Yeah, cool. Thank you.
