Tribute to the finnish legends of modern doom metal. Song taken from their awesome 'In the rectory of bizarre reverend' debut album, and the vocals are kind of doubled as there is extra layer for vocals isolated from the source bootleg video just as an experiment of sorts. Combination of studio track and isolated bootleg video vocals which have some reverb and delay added. Video was edited from this awesome 2006 bootleg (which is more than worth watching if you ask me) which you can check in its' original form here: • REVEREND BIZARRE Live In Dublin, Ireland 1... I first heard RB only when they had already released debut album and also the (magnificent) EP "Harbinger of metal". One friend suggested checking the band out and of course I did. At very first I was just like oh yeah, this is traditional doom metal, I know the drill - I had enjoyed doom metal since late 1980s already, bands like Candlemass, St. Vitus and Trouble for example, bit later of course bands like The Obsessed, Count Raven, Cathedral (Napalm Death connection, Lee Dorrian, was enough reason for me alone), Electric Wizard, etc. But the point is, that at very first I felt like RB was average, okey, kind of enjoyable doom metal. It's hard to pinpoint where and how it happened, but I think it was "harbinger of metal" which especially lit up my doom fire for RB. Then I started listening more and more also "in the rectory..." album and soon I was thinking like "how on earth could I think this is just average trad doom metal!?" ... fast forward to their "crush the insects" album in summer 2005 and yeah, you guessed it, I bought it the day it came out. I had already bought previous RB releases, too and them fires of modern doom were burning hot already. Certain events felt both great and hilarious, as for example RB's single release "slave of satan" with its' 20+ minutes of length went to number 1 on finnish music charts and stayed there for a while. Just funny (in a best possible way!). So, you can guess the rest, ... it was time for the "so long suckers" album, hell of a doom album, which I of course bought as well and again a single cut ("teutonic witch") went to top position at finnish music charts back then. Awesome times. It was just bittersweet, already knowing that the band will quit after that massive "so long suckers" album. There is no bad release ever put out by this band. Take for example the compilation "death is glory ... now" and you have a fantastic compilation out there filled with thrilling doom pieces. Even the ancient finnish joke song by S.Salminen from 1960s - "rotestilaulu" - I don't think anyone could "cover" the song better than RB did. It's a tremendous case alone. Plain jokesong (that's what the original song is) turned into punishing doom metal heaviness with excellent dramatic, almost theatrical vocals and the joke turns into serious tale ... in some ways, one could say. I wouldn't be able to name just one best song by RB, there are so many gems in their discography. But I could go on claiming that "from the void" (a song which you can find from "harbinger of metal") is the heaviest ever recorded doom metal song. And at the same time it manages to be catchy in a sick way. If Lovecraft tale(s) would be turned into doom metal, it would sound like "from the void" by RB. Yeah! Personally I would go as far as saying Reverend Bizarre was (and still is) the ultimate / best traditional doom metal band in the 2000s (and after, so far anyway). Truly unique creativity in many ways, and well ... considering that I listened to doom metal since pre'teenager in late 1980s, RB was the first ever doom metal band which inspired me so much that I started my own poor man's doom metal project (Mood:Doom - scifi doom metal) just some years after the end of Reverend Bizarre. The numerous band projects by former RB members are all worth checking out, too. And in case if you don't know, there are lots of bands and stuff to check, indeed. Many excellent bands and releases. I keep thinking RB would return in some way or another sometimes in the future ... Enjoy!
