SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Friday, February 20, 2026 — Santa Monica police officers took a man into custody Friday afternoon at Palisades Park following what initially appeared to be a consensual encounter. The man, who appeared to be experiencing homelessness, was observed lying on a park bench when officers approached and began speaking with him. According to what was witnessed at the scene, the interaction remained calm as officers requested his name and conducted a records check using an in-field computer system. After several minutes, officers returned to the bench, placed the man in handcuffs, and escorted him to a nearby patrol vehicle. He was transported from the park without further incident. While the exact reason for taking the man into custody was not confirmed at the scene, it appeared the custody decision may have followed the records search. No additional details regarding potential charges or warrants were immediately available.
