The first legal recreational marijuana sales in North Carolina will begin on September 7th, 2024. The sales will take place on the Cherokee Indian Reservation, also known as the Qualla Boundary, and will be open to all adults aged 21 and above. The Cherokee Indian Reservation, as a sovereign nation, has the authority to establish its own laws and regulations. The Great Smoky Cannabis Co., operated by Qualla Enterprises, LLC, a business entity of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, first opened on April 20, 2024, for the sale of medical cannabis. On July 4, 2024, the dispensary commenced adult-use sales to EBCI tribal members and members of other federally recognized tribes. Starting September 7th, 2024, anyone over the age of 21 will be able to purchase recreational cannabis. It's important to note that while marijuana possession and sales will be legal on the Qualla Boundary, it will remain illegal in the rest of North Carolina. This means that even if you are able to purchase it, you will not be allowed to take it outside the Qualla Boundary.
