Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest planet in our Solar System. This small planets hold many bizarre phenomena and weird characteristics. In 2004, NASA launched a spacecraft to study the planet closely. Its name was Mariner 10 spacecraft. It was the very first space probe that was sent to study the features of Mercury. We learned almost everything about Mercury from these missions. Mercury is the second most densest planet in our Solar System after our Earth. One of the most distinctive features of mercury is its rotation on its own axis and its orbit around the Sun. Both these features are very much different that other planets in the Solar System. Because Mercury doesn't have enough mass and gravity, it couldn't hold enough gas to form a thick atmosphere. Due to the lack of an atmosphere, different regions of Mercury's temperature varies too much. On the very first look, Mercury will look similar to our Moon. But, Mercury is larger that our moon for sure. But it is smaller than the 2 biggest moons in our solar system, Ganymede and Titan. Even though those 2 moons are bigger than Mercury, Mercury's density is so high and therefore it is much massive than them. One of the most visibly appealing structures in the Mercury is a very huge crater known as the Caloris Planitia(or caloris basin). Its diameter is around 1550km! It must had formed due to a very large collision. Even though Mercury have no atmosphere, it does have a very thin Exosphere. But because Mercury is too much closer to the Sun, Sun's solar wind will continuously blow out this exosphere. After a while, another thin exosphere will be formed from various sources but the solar wind will blow out it again. This cycle will continuously take on Mercury.
