When we ask whether a human behavior is based on genetics (nature) or environment (nurture), are we asking the right question? And why does it matter? MIT Professor Emeritus Stephan Chorover, who passed away in 2015, was a pioneer of neuroscience in the early 1960s, and a founding member of MIT's Department of Psychology, now known as the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. As the field developed he became increasingly concerned that oversimplified biological explanations of human behavior could be used by governments or other institutions as a means of control. In particular he was concerned about "psychosurgery," experimental brain surgeries to cure behavioral problems, which sometimes had disastrous results for patients. Chorover devoted much of his career to teaching undergraduates about the social aspects of psychology and neuroscience, with a focus on how pseudoscience has historically been used to justify social injustices including slavery. In 2013, I interviewed Prof. Chorover for my documentary "From Mind to Brain: The Story of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT." In this clip he discusses the nature vs. nurture debate and how the events the 1960s influenced his outlook. Director of Photography: Rob Eckel.
