(CP, cytophosphane, Cytoxan, CTX) A drug used as chemotherapy (for lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukemia, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, small-cell lung cancer, neuroblastoma, sarcoma) and to suppress immune system (for organ transplantation, nephrotic syndrome, granulomatosis with polyangiitis). It is taken per os or intravenously. It belongs to nitrogen mustard family of nonspecific DNA alkylating agents, that are able to add an alkyl group to the guanine base of the DNA molecule, preventing the strands of the double helix from linking as they should. This causes breakage of the DNA strands, affecting the ability of the cancer cell to multiply. (Nitrogen mustards are cytotoxic organic compounds, used as chemotherapeutic agents for treatment of cancer as well as chemical warfare agents.) Common side effects include low white blood cell counts, loss of appetite, vomiting, hair loss, and bleeding from bladder. Other severe side effects include an increased future risk of cancer, infertility, allergic reactions, and pulmonary fibrosis.
