They don't try and find trash bins. We need political action and things like this. And that's why our association does clean work all the year to warn people all the year and not just for one day - 'oh we're talking of this thing for one day and tomorrow we'll forget everything'." 12. SOUNDBITE (English) Sonia Hannebicque, local resident "I lived in South Africa, in Cape Town, a few years ago and the French school in Cape Town brought the kids to the beach and they organised beach cleanups and for my kids, it was important for them to participate. Now we are back in Paris and it's important for us to continue to clean up all the nature that we have around." 16. Mid of volunteer 17. Wide of group with golden dome in distance STORYLINE: Two dozen volunteers gathered at a Paris park on Saturday to pick up litter in an event marking World Cleanup day. Local activist Mathieu Réal handed out litter pickers and gloves to the group of locals before they fanned out across the square, scanning the lawn for cigarette butts and plastic bottles. Réal said cigarette butts were by far the most widely seen among items discarded by people in the park and playground. He added that although Saturday's event was useful in terms of raising awareness, political action was needed to address the problem of litter. Volunteer Sonia Hannebicque said she first came across a cleanup event on a South African beach with her children. "Now we are back in Paris and it's important for us to continue to clean up all the nature that we have around." World Cleanup Day is held annually on the third Saturday of September and is an event that invites volunteers to clean their neighbourhoods and environs. It was founded by Tallinn-based organisation, Let's Do It! World.
