In this lecture on single-photon sources, hosted by the IDA, Associate Professor at DTU Fotonik Niels Gregersen gives an overview of recent progress within deterministic sources of quantum light. IDA writes about the lecture: Niels Gregersen, DTU, winner of the Electro Award 2020, giving a talk on quantum light sources. The holy grail within quantum physics is the quantum computer, and here quantum light sources play an important role. According to quantum mechanics, there is a smallest unit of light, which we call the photon. It is a strange quantum mechanical object, capable for example of being in two places at once - this is superposition. Within photonic quantum technologies, the quantum nature of the photon is exploited to construct new functionalities unobtainable using classical means. The holy grail within quantum physics is the quantum computer, and here the weak interaction of light with the environment makes the photon an ideal candidate for a “flying qubit”. For these technologies to work, we need to be able to produce pure single photons on-demand, and the single-photon source is thus a key component in photonic quantum technologies. Niels Gregersen, DTU, will give an overview of recent progress within deterministic sources of quantum light. It turns out that classical antenna concepts developed in the past 80 years are not suitable for single-photon generation, and entirely new concepts are needed. In spite of recent progress, significant research challenges within the theory of light-matter interaction and within the design and fabrication of nanophotonic devices remain.
