What does retinol do for your skin and how do you use it? Have you wondered about adding retinol to your skin care routine – what it might do, is it worth the investment in time and the learning curve required before adding an important ingredient like this? I’m a dermatologist and a huge retinol fan – and a retinoid fan. Retinoids are the family of compounds which retinol is a part of. Retinol is over the counter and you don’t need a prescription. The scientific proof shows it is great for your skin. What does retinol do for you skin? It can turn on collagen formation in your skin, also known as collagen renewal. This can prevent collagen loss that happens with age and sun damage. It also helps replenish lost collagen. Retinol and retinoids brighten your skin. They change the outer dead skin cell layer and these results happen fast. You see them as a brighter and smoother skin tone. Retinol induces hyaluronic acid production in your skin. You can add hyaluronic acid products to your skin care routine but your skin makes it too. This is fine as more is better. Retinol turns on the skin cells in the deeper layers of your skin (dermis) to make hyaluronic acid. This leads to your skin looking dewier and younger. Retinol helps control pigment formation. For example, pigmentation formed through sun damage, age or melasma (the mask of pregnancy) is reduced with retinol. For these reasons, retinol is a popular skin care ingredient in skin care routines created and discussed by dermatologists. How do you add retinol to your skin care routine? I like it used at night because retinoids can be fragile on contact with light. I like you to put it on before or after your moisturizer depending on the base of your retinol product. If your retinol is in a moisturizing base you don’t need to add additional moisturizer. What ingredient combinations do you need to know about when you add retinol? Don’t apply benzoyl peroxide and retinol at the same time. Retinol does combine well with glycolic acid and you can apply them together. If you use retinol during the day apply it under a mineral zinc oxide sunscreen. I hope this was helpful and that you have a wonderful day.
