I've wanted to make a drum vid for this song off Meshuggah's album "Chaosphere" for a few years now. This album is just so intense & it's definitely one of my all time favorite Meshuggah releases. This one and Catch 33 are probably their two most underrated albums in my opinion. What's funny is I actually got into Chaosphere a bit later than all the other Meshuggah stuff I love. For whatever reason, I didn't REALLY start listening to this album often until around early 2018 I think. I'd of course heard "New Millenium Cyanide Christ" (this album is the king of ridiculous metal song titles lol) a million times as well as a live version of this song off their "Alive" album/DVD. Once I started really listening through this album more often, I always came back to this track. Like most of the songs on the album, it's relentless & stupidly heavy nonstop until the end. It's got a buncha sick syncopated grooves & is a shining example of Meshuggah's signature over the bar line rhythms. In some ways, I see this album as the moment when Meshuggah fully realized what they were trying to do. While I love "Destroy Erase Improve", there're a lot of moods/styles that they abandoned after that album. This album is almost ALL fucked up rhythms the entire time lol. After this record, you listen to "Nothing" & the same concept is apparent but in a much slower & sludgier way. This album was not tracked to a click, so I had to map out a custom tempo map that goes up & down in BPM in order to make my own click to play to. It's cool hearing the groove push & pull throughout the track. I'm pretty anal about playing to a click when learning a song these days, but a big reason why I went through the trouble of making one for this song was to learn the whole thing slowed way down. Whenever I learn a new song, I learn it at a much slower tempo & that's a lot easier to do when you have a click, instead of trying to timestretch the song itself & jam along to it that way. I also didn't feel like bothering with any software specifically designed for that. But again, the main reason is that I generally just really prefer playing to a click when playing through-composed music & putting in the time to learn a song pretty much note for note like I did here. I tried my best to EQ the drums out of the original track because I obviously did not have the album stems. Because of having to EQ it so drastically, there are moments where certain frequencies poke out a bit sharply or things get a bit wonky w/ the phase/panning. I'm not a professional audio engineer by any means, but I tried my best to get everything sounding as best I could! I'm pretty satisfied overall w/ my drums specifically & I think the track itself is quiet enough for those frequencies not to be too big of an issue. I just really did not want to deal with mixing my drums over the original album drums & having to put up with flams & things like that. Here & there you may be able to hear the original drums poke through the tiniest bit, but I pretty much got rid of them. I played this song pretty much note for note to the original recording. There're some moments on the album where it's a bit hard to tell EXACTLY what's going on with the kick drum as the mix is a bit muddy at times. I am 99% sure I interpreted everything correctly though other than a fill or two that I changed on purpose. I transcribed the song with a few of those small things I decided to add/change. The ghost notes at 2:21 are something I decided to add after transcribing it, so those are not in my transcription. If you'd like to download my drum transcription for this song as well as transcriptions for a bunch of other stuff I've done, you can download them for free at this Dropbox link. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pavrxgbk7v... You may notice that for a lot of the "E's" & "A's" I'm strictly using my left foot. This is something I picked up from watching Brent Rodgers. Brent has actually made a couple awesome Meshuggah playthroughs which were somewhat of an inspiration for this video. I feel like always hitting the downbeats (1 / &) with my right foot & upbeats w/ the left causes me to feel a bit more solid, whereas hitting downbeats w/ my left foot & upbeats w/ my right bc of an odd rhythm can feel quite weird. Sometimes it can be a bit tricky playing this way for certain things, but most of the time it just feels natural for me at this point. I won't deny, however, that I made it a POINT to do it in this video bc of Brent & his Meshuggah covers haha. Got mad respect for that guy!
