The aorta originates from the **left ventricle* at the lower border of the third costal cartilage, situated behind the sternum and slightly to the left in the superior mediastinum. It initially curves upwards, forming the **ascending aorta**. This section gives rise to the **right and left coronary arteries**, which supply blood to the heart. The aorta then turns left and backwards, transitioning into the *aortic arch**. From its outer convexity, three significant branches arise: the **brachiocephalic artery**, which quickly divides into the **right common carotid artery* and the **right subclavian artery**; the **left common carotid artery**; and the **left subclavian artery**. The common carotid arteries ascend in the neck, almost identically, passing deeply behind the sternoclavicular joint to the upper border of the thyroid, where each divides into the external and internal carotid arteries. The internal carotid artery, with no branches in the neck, ascends into the skull, while the external carotid artery supplies the face and neck. Following the aortic arch, the aorta turns downwards, becoming the *descending aorta**. The **descending thoracic aorta* travels through the thorax along the vertebral column, giving off various branches within the mediastinum.
