A recent ruling by a federal court reaffirmed this authority by suspending policies from the Department of Homeland Security that attempted to impose prior notice requirements. The key is not only what the system does, but how we respond. While many establishment Democrats fail to oppose fascism, not all elected officials are the same. The American people are organizing. For example, Representative Jimmy Gomez and eleven other members filed a lawsuit against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). A court recently ruled that the administration cannot prevent Congress from conducting surprise inspections of immigrant detention centers. This restores crucial transparency. Authoritarians try to seize power through bullying, testing whether you will resist. If you don't, they claim that power as the "new normal." Resistance in all its forms is essential. This lawsuit is a perfect example of using legal means to deter authoritarian overreach. This victory is important. While it does not stop ICE, it reaffirms the principle of accountability. We must celebrate every victory for democracy. The fascist strategy relies on making us surrender. Unfortunately, many establishment Democrats have "surrendered in advance," avoiding real opposition. However, progressive Democrats in the House are showing real resistance. Gomez’s visit after the ruling revealed that people were being detained beyond legal limits in poor conditions—facts that ICE wanted to hide from scrutiny. Every act of resistance delays their plans and defends rights. We are in a period of authoritarian encroachment and must resist through all legal means. Small, cumulative victories are how we chip away at fascism.
