What is the point of Jesus' miracles? Why doesn't he just come and teach? Why does Jesus perform miraculous actions in the Gospels? In this video Dr. Brant Pitre covers the scene where Jesus heals the paralytic and forgive his sins in the Gospel of Mark, Chapter 2. And, it's very important to note that Jesus not only heals the man but also forgives his sins, after which the bystanders ask, "Who can forgive sins but God alone?" Only God, in a Jewish context, can forgive sins that someone has done toward another. Jesus asks in this scene in the Gospel if it is harder to forgive sins or to heal someone from a physical ailment? The obvious implication is that it is easier to say you forgave sins since there is no visible manifestation of your sins being forgiven. So, in order for people to believe that he can forgive sins, he performs the visible miracle so that they come to believe he can perform the invisible miracle of forgiving sins. So, the point of his visibly demonstrable miracles is to provide a motive of credibility to trust him when he does and speaks of the invisible realities he enacts and speaks of in his ministry.
