Dr. Vivek Sasindran, Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon Tonsillectomy is a common surgical procedure, primarily performed on children under general anesthesia. Although adults may also undergo this surgery, it is less frequent, and tonsil glands may be removed as part of other procedures. The surgical techniques used for tonsillectomy vary, with the dissection method being the most prevalent. However, more advanced technology such as Coblation is now available, which can reduce bleeding during the surgery. Parents are provided with all options available, but the most crucial factor is the complete removal of the tonsil. Each technique has its own benefits and risks, and the procedure typically takes around 30 to 40 minutes. One common complication associated with tonsillectomy is bleeding, which is controlled during the surgery. Special devices are used to manage bleeding, and the patient is only brought out of anesthesia after bleeding is under control. Following the surgery, patients are advised to avoid thick, spicy, and fried foods for a week and stick to a soft, bland diet. Parents may also have concerns about whether tonsils can regrow and what to do if bleeding occurs. Tonsils do not regrow after complete removal, and bleeding during surgery is managed before the patient wakes up. In rare cases, bleeding may occur within 24 hours after surgery, or delayed bleeding may occur several days later due to infection at the site. However, such bleeding can be treated medically. Overall, tonsillectomy is a relatively safe and uncomplicated procedure under normal circumstances.
