Welcome to the wide world of statistics! This chapter is a massive deviation (pun intended, see below) from the algebra material we've been covering in the first six chapters. In this section in particular, we focus on measures of center (mean, median, and mode) as well as measures of variation (range and standard deviation), and when they should be used. The mean of a data set is its average, adding up the values and dividing by the amount of values. The median is the middle value in your set (written in increasing order); if there are two "middle values" because you have an even amount, you must average those two middle values for the median. The mode is the value that occurs most frequently, and it is possible to have multiple or no modes. The range is the difference between your highest and lowest values. Standard deviation has a massive formula (which uses the mean) and I'll leave the textbook problems to show you it, but its basic premise is to show how far your points stray from the mean value. Given that this is IM1 material and mostly an introduction to these items, you're not going to go super hard and heavy into their meanings and interpretations, but if you take a statistics course you will learn a LOT about what standard deviation truly means, how the number is used, and when it's best to use it.
