Kissos is a relatively mountainous village, built at an altitude of 660 meters, which however combines the mountain and the sea qualities in an ideal way due to the short distance (8km) from Agios #Ioannis, 12km from the #ski center (via the new road #Chania - Kissos) and 12 km from #Zagora. As can be seen in the pictures, the vegetation of the whole area is vast, reminiscent of a #rainforest. A protected habitat of the #Natura network. A blessed place that offers special moments to nature #lovers and not only. The village has 332 inhabitants, but in the past it was abandoned and its inhabitants moved to Agios Ioannis. It lies 48 km from #Volos, the capital of #Magnesia, 365 km from #Athens and 246 km from #Thessaloniki. The name of the village may refer to the ivy plant or, according to the version of the historian Kordatos, from a corruption of the word gold (Chryssos in #Greek), from an ore mine that was #discovered in the area. The inhabitants of Kissos are mainly engaged in #agriculture, some in the timber trade and a growing percentage are engaged in #tourism. In Pelion, by all accounts, the main attractions are the wonderful surrounding nature, the magnificent view towards the sea, the local #architecture. Specifically, in Kissos, the large #square of the village stands out, a meeting point, place of rest, #contemplation, relaxation and festive events. In the center dominates the #church of #Santa #Marina, a three-aisled #basilica, built around 1650, which was restored (according to the inscription) in the year 1747. Constructed in accordance with the natural landscape, it has been declared a historical monument. It has a wood-carved iconostasis and #frescoes by the popular painter Yiannis Pagonis. Do not hesitate to taste the crystal clear water from the #marble #lion #fountain, of 1937. In the village you may find interesting #restaurants, popular throughout the wider region for their local #specialties, the quality and the yummy flavors.
