Internationally renowned animal conservation charity, Howletts Wild Animal Park, is delighted to announce the birth of baby gorilla, Yaounde. Weighing just 1.04kg at birth, Yaounde was born on 19th June 2019, approximately six weeks short of full term. Yaounde now weighs 2.8kg, her first tooth has started to come through and she sometimes gives a little gorilla ‘laugh’ when she is tickled. Under the care of the dedicated vets and carers at Howletts she is getting stronger every day. Howletts is a conservation charity and a breeding sanctuary for some of the most rare and endangered species in the world. Working in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation, Howletts aims to return animals born at the park to protected areas of their natural habitat. The Aspinall Foundation manages conservation projects in Congo, Gabon, Indonesia and Madagascar, as well as providing financial support to various partner projects around the world. Damian Aspinall, Chairman of The Aspinall Foundation said: ‘we are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated team working across our Foundation, all of whom are passionately committed to safeguarding the future of our animals. Yaounde is kept under the watchful eyes of her carers 24 hours a day and they monitor her closely to ensure she continues to build her strength.’ The conservation charity’s important work helps prevent some of the most endangered species on the planet from becoming extinct. With over 400 animals across 50 individual species set in 100 acres of ancient parkland, plus plenty of new births and arrivals, visitors have the opportunity to see animals at Howletts that they won’t see anywhere else in the UK. Lorna Wanless Head of Gorilla Section and Brian Hammer, Deputy Head of Gorilla Section note ‘Yaounde is becoming more aware of her surroundings as we take her between each gorilla group at Howletts to introduce her and get her used to different noises and smells. We sit outside the gorilla habitats holding Yaounde and record any interactions or interest from any of the older gorillas. While it is still early days, we are so happy with her progress and are looking forward to what the future holds.
