Founded in 2007 in the Province of Bergamo and supported by numerous Prefectures and local administrations, On the Road stands out for its ability to actively engage young people through the peer education method — young people educating their peers — helping to spread awareness, civic responsibility and a shared culture of safety. In October 2025, at the Italian Ministry of the Interior (Viminale), an interministerial Memorandum of Understanding was signed to launch a nationwide pilot programme for an innovative road safety education model. The agreement was signed by the Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, and the President of the association, Egidio Provenzi. The protocol initiates a programme that will involve up to ten pilot areas across Italy. Strongly promoted by both Ministers and officially announced at the Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples in Rimini, the project aims to transform civic education into real-life experience. Young people aged 16 and over, after receiving specific training and insurance coverage, will work alongside law enforcement agencies, local police forces and the European emergency number system 112, experiencing first-hand activities related to prevention, road safety and emergency response. In 2025, On the Road also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mediterranean Tourism Foundation and the Malta Police Force, with the objective of extending its experiential education and prevention programmes to the island of Malta. This agreement marks the first step toward adapting the On the Road model to the Maltese context, strengthening the link between youth education, public safety and sustainable tourism in a key Mediterranean destination.
