(27 May 2017) ROMAN POLANKSI: NETFLIX IS NOT A THREAT TO CINEMA Acclaimed director Roman Polanski believes that Netflix and other VOD services are not a threat to cinema. Speaking at the Saturday (27 MAY 2017) press conference for his latest film, "Based on a True Story" (which is showing out of competition at this year's festival), the 83-year-old said that the act of watching a movie with other people in a darkened theater is unique. "I think that people will go to the movies not because it's a better sound or a better projection or better seats than they have in their homes," he said. "They go to the cinema because they can participate in an experience with the audience. People like experiencing things and spectacle together and I think that's the main reason why people go to the cinema. It's very difficult, for example, to experience, to see, I don't know, 'Borat' alone or see it in the cinema packed with a laughing audience." The festival has two Netflix films in competition for the coveted Palme d'Or top prize: South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's "Okja" and Noah Baumbach's Adam Sandler-led "The Meyerowitz Stories" (New and Selected). Those selections sparked an outcry from French exhibitors, who recoiled at the thought of one of cinema's highest honors going to a film that won't play in their theaters. When an agreement couldn't be reached between Netflix and French theaters, the Cannes Film Festival declared that next year, streaming-only films will not be accepted for the competition. As well as referencing comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's 2006 hit comedy, Polanski also revealed he's a fan of "Sin City: A Dame to Die For" and that he cast his latest leading lady – French actress Eva Green - after watching Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's 2014 flop. "I loved the movie and I loved her character – the humor of it and the seduction, twined together, created a phenomenal character and I suggest that if you didn't, you see this movie very soon." Green stars in the thriller as a character known simply as "L" – a deeply mysterious woman who befriends actress Emmanuelle Seigner's writer Delphine. Although "Based on a True Story" is Seigner's fifth film with husband Polanski, she was quick to point out that he inspires her and not the other way around. "I'm often asked is it easy? Is it difficult to work with one's wife?" said Polanski. "But what's difficult is we go back home after a hard day's work and it's hard to be the husband of an actress who is such a star. It's hard to be the director of one's own wife. For me, days are very intense and when I get back home I like to forget the set to a degree whereas Emmanuelle, she likes to talk about her day at work. That's perhaps the only difficulty." When asked a follow up question about whether it was easier to live with a woman or to direct them, the veteran director replied, "I don't understand how somebody intelligent can ask such stupid questions! Of course, it's evident that it's easier to work with them than to live with them!" "Based on a True Story," which is based on a novel by Delphine de Vigan, also stars Vincent Perez and Alexia Seferoglou.
