In his book Alienated America, Tim Carney observed that people from my background have a tendency to "live right but preach left"—that is to say that we can to live in a manner aligned with conservative values while telling everybody else to just "you do you as long as you're not hurting anyone." While I don't think he explicitly called us hypocritical for it I felt like it was kind of implied by his framing and I began thinking about that more. I have come to the conclusion that I think it is kind of hypocritical where people are either asking your advice or where they are asking for help and you are willing to give help but not advice, especially if it comes from a place of not wanting conflict and/or not wanting to be seen as a judgmental person.
