In this video you will learn how you can select a good quality Ochiba Shigure. Ochiba Shigure means ‘Autumn leaves on the water’ if you translate it from Japanese. The brown represents fallen leaves that float on top of the water in autumn. 00:00 Selecting for now or the future 00:20 The Ochiba Shigure variety 02:32 The pattern of Ochiba Shigure 05:33 Head pattern 06:46 Brown colour and development 10:10 Which Ochiba is the best in this bowl? 14:40 Which Ochiba is your favorite? Ochiba Shigure is not the most standard variety, it is something different than for example Gosanke. It came to existence using Chagoi: which are entirely brown Koi. In combination with Soragoi: entirely grey Koi. Typical characteristics for Ochiba Shigure is that it tends to be very tame, so easy to learn them to eat from your hands as well. Selecting the pattern: We prefer to look for a multiple step pattern on Ochiba Shigure Koi. Just like how you select a Kohaku, with multiple red steps on the white skin. For Ochiba this is of course brown steps on the grey base. The pattern should have larger patches, instead of small dots. Head pattern: The head pattern of an Ochiba Shigure should lay inbetween the eyes. So they brown area is only covering the area on top of the nose. It should not overlap the eyes preferable. Brown color of Ochiba Shigure: Some Ochiba have a lighter colour, while others have a darker colour. Sometimes up to chocolate brown, dark brown colour. Ochiba with a darker color are more likely to develop a net pattern around their scales. Something I personally prefer to see on a Ochiba Shigure. But of course this is personal choice, believe me it will look really well though. Intensity of the brown color: should be the same over the entire body of the fish. Also pay attention to the tail area of the Ochiba Shigure. This area should still have the same intensity as the brown patterns on the rest of the Ochiba.
