You have to put in the hours and walk before you can run. And that’s okay. That being said, having the right mindset will have you pick up the game a lot faster. As well as save you some frustrating setbacks and struggles. These are my 5 tips to get good at poker. 1) PLAY A LOT OF POKER Yes, this sounds very basic - and it is. There’s just no way around it. You can consume all the poker books, videos and movies you want - but the most effective way to get better at poker is to just play a lot. You know, the 10,000 hours rule and what not. An important thing to keep in mind though, is to play the right games. First of all, you should play for fun or for light money. Stay away from big money games. You need a sandbox environment where you can have fun, experiment and make mistakes, without losing your life savings. Secondly, you should stick to playing players your own level, or just above you. Getting beaten in your local casino over and over again won’t teach you much or help you evolve your skills. Stick to playing poker at your own level. However, you can of course always ask great players for advice, of course. 2) KNOW BASIC POKER STRATEGY A fast and easy way to stand out from the beginners is to just scratch the surface of #pokerstrategy. It doesn’t have to be a deep dive into heavy books or long blog posts. In fact it probably should, since that sounds super boring and will probably just discourage you. But, short YouTube videos like this one are perfect. I’ve actually created what I believe is the best and complete poker playlist on YouTube. It’s a short series of 6 videos teaching you the basics of poker rules and strategy - such as position, bluffing and betting - in less than 30 minutes. Remember to keep things light and play more than you read. And, if you can, play with friends you like. 4) KEEP YOUR OPPONENTS IN MIND Poker is not Solitaire - you have opponents here. Don’t just be looking at your own cards and how they relate to the community cards. Poker is about reading your opponents as well. So look up. How do they act, and how might their actions indicate the hand they have? When you get a good read on your opponents, poker becomes a lot more fun. Aspects like betting and bluffing also become a lot easier and less risky. So look up when playing poker - the other players might be telling you exactly what you need to know about their cards! 5) DO IT FOR THE FUN OF IT A lot of new players start playing because they like to gamble, because they want to become famous poker players or because they want to get rich in a hurry. And don’t get me wrong, some achieve this through poker. But, let me tell you, those who get to that level, are playing poker because they love the game. Fame and fortune is just a byproduct of following your passion.
