This video was shot in 2018 and there are some improvements that could be made. We are refining our practices constantly. The focus of the video was to show fire stations how quickly gross decontamination could be setup autonomously with the simple purchase of 2 buckets and 2 brooms from the local hardware store and the use of liquid hand soap available on most fire trucks (Dish detergent will be too alkaline). Decontamination of turnout/bunker gear following firefighting operations is crucial to the health and safety of firefighters. Contaminated PPC/PPE will continue to offgas around you as you take your SCBA off, immediately exposing you to harmful toxic gases. So it is imperative to perform wet soap decon while on air immediately after exiting the job. Decon must take place inside the hot zone, on the border of the warm zone as is the case with any HAZMAT incident. Clearly marked areas should be made available to guide crews who requre decontamination where to go. It is possible that crews exiting the fire will be low on air. Obviously, providing a breathable atmosphere to the firefighter takes precedence over the need for decontamination. The video discusses the need to allow the PPC to offgas before bagging it. If there is not a suitable isolated area to do this, then the preference is to double bag or as per your organisations laundering policies. www.firefightercancercoalition.com info@firefightercancercoalition.com
