Indigenous Media Used as a Means of Cultural Change in a Period of Transformation of Culture and Society in Taiwan was given as part of the Taiwan Studies Summer School 2018 by Prof Chia-Sui Crystal Sun at the Centre of Taiwan Studies, SOAS University of London on 11 July 2018. Find out more at http://bit.ly/2TMXv8Y Indigenous media can convey significant cultural and social meanings in Taiwan. The aim of this talk is to show different cultural forms of indigenous media in Taiwan and investigate roles which indigenous media takes in the changing cultural and social context in Taiwan. By taking an overview of development of indigenous media in Taiwan this talk endeavours to analyze and explain ways in which indigenous media strengthens the identity of indigenous people, showing the cultural heritage of tribes, helps to maintain indigenous languages and also become a public sphere for debate about indigenous issues. Indigenous media also builds the connection between indigenous culture and the wide world. In the cultural policy aspect indigenous media not only records and keeps tradition it also enhances opportunity for creating possibilities to further facilitate different cultural forms such as indigenous music and indigenous craft. When indigenous society encounters changes indigenous media becomes an important cultural and social means to engage with indigenous social movements, cultural changes and maintenance of indigenous languages. The talk also explores representation of different indigenous media forms and reveals cultural translations among different indigenous cultures and languages in Taiwan. Speaker Bio Chia-Sui Crystal Sun is currently professor in the Department of Indigenous Languages and Communication, National Dong Hwa University. She obtained her PhD at the University of Birmingham, UK, in the Department of Cultural Study and Sociology; her M.A. for Journalism and Mass Communication was obtained at the University of Oklahoma, USA and her B.A in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. Her research focuses on communication and culture, journalism and representation, globalization, cultural creative industry and cultural policy. Sun’s recent research uses interdisciplinary approach to explore various aspects of indigenous media in Taiwan. Her research reveal and brings insight showing the connection of indigenous media to cultural translation, gender taboos, media audiences and information society.
