Gulenist cult members are masters of dissimulation. This is the building block of the cult’s totalitarian ideology. Gulenist cult members live a double life and they are ordered by their cult leader to pass as non-religious, irreligious, or even anti-religious individuals in order not to attract the attention of others and to infiltrate key state institutions in the countries where they operate. For example, it is very difficult – if not impossible – to discern anything religious in the outside appearance of Gulenist cult members. Male members are typically clean-shaven and wear Western suits and ties, whereas female members are ordered to remove their headscarf when they marry someone important from key state institutions (such as the police, military, judiciary) or even when they enter university. Gulenist cult members take religious injunctions only from cult leader Gulen and they blindly follow his commands even when those commands are in open contradiction with Islamic principles. For instance, in order to avoid the scrutiny of secular army officers and thus to infiltrate the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), cult leader Gulen instructed his followers that it was permissible to drink alcohol and for Gulenist wives to wear revealing swimsuits when they were invited to pool parties organized by secular Turkish army officers. Cult leader Gulen justifies all this by using the classic Machiavellian rhetoric that the “end justifies the means.” Hence, cult members believe that they are indeed sacrificing themselves for the sake of a “noble purpose.” Finally, Gulenist cult members typically use fake names when conducting all cult-related activities and during their meetings, while mobile phones are typically turned off and are left outside the meeting room.
