Tom Jeffreys was born in Llanelli in 1894, but moved to Baltimore in Maryland in the early 20th century as one of a number of Welsh immigrants who took up jobs in the nascent steel industry there having honed their skills in the tin plate industry at home. "Once there were many like him, but not anymore." In 1976, Tom spoke about his Welsh roots, rugby and his days at Eastern Steel - a role from which he had been retired for 15 years. As the man himself says, "I am still a Llanelli boy, I am also a Welshman and an American, and I'm proud of being the three." Clip taken from ...and the Pursuit of Happiness: The Welsh Experience in America (Last of the Tough Welshmen), originally broadcast on BBC One Wales, Thursday 25 November, 1976.
