The so-called train graveyard in the quarry near Alsager, Cheshire: In White Moss Quarry near Alsager, an unusual sight has emerged: twelve Brush Class 60 diesel locomotives, previously part of the DB Cargo (formerly EWS) fleet, now sit abandoned together in deteriorating condition . These locos were built between 1989 and 1993, numbered between 60001 and 60100 . Usage and Condition Originally delivered to the quarry in 2024 by a company called Land Recovery for possible restoration, the locomotives are instead tightly packed, unused, showing rust, broken windows, holes in roofs, and encroaching vegetation . Locals note that space is cramped and conditions show disuse over time, forming a haunting and desolate visual scene . One urban exploration report specifically listed the loco numbers: 60012, 60032, 60036, 60037, 60048, 60052, 60068, 60077, 60078, 60084, 60089, and 60093 . Context of the Quarry The site remains an active industrial quarry, historically used for peat extraction with operations permitted until 2028, and there have been proposals to redevelop the site for residential use (up to 350 homes, care facilities, retail), though those plans have stalled or been rejected . Historical Importance The Class 60s, nicknamed “Tugs” by rail enthusiasts, were heavy freight engines built on British soil to handle coal, aggregate, and general freight duties. Though just a dozen remain at this location, they are part of a rare surviving class of locomotives that once numbered 100 . Why It Matters For railfans: it’s a unique snapshot of British freight locomotive heritage in suspended animation.
