On 25 June 1934, the front page of the Pariser Tageblatt reported a dramatic story: an alleged assassination attempt on Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler in the forests of the Schorfheide, north-east of Berlin. This video takes you to the very locations where this incident supposedly unfolded – the same forests, the roads and the remains of Carinhall, Hermann Göring’s country estate – to examine what really happened on 19 June 1934. In the summer of 1934, tensions inside Nazi Germany were reaching boiling point. The power struggle between Hitler’s inner circle and Ernst Röhm’s SA created an atmosphere of suspicion, paranoia and fear. When Himmler’s Maybach limousine was struck by a mysterious object on the way to the solemn reburial of Carin Göring, he immediately saw it as an assassination attempt. But was it? In this documentary, I walk through the eyewitness testimonies, archival reports, and memoirs from key figures — Otto Dietrich, Rudolf Diels, Heinz Linge, Hans Bernd Gisevius and others — to reveal just how differently this single event was interpreted. Was it a bullet fired from the trees? A deliberate SA ambush? Or simply a stone thrown up from the road? We also follow the fates of SA-Standartenführer Karl Belding and Bernhard Fischer-Schweder, arrested and condemned during the purge of 30 June 1934 — the Night of the Long Knives — after being blamed by Himmler despite the police conclusion that he had not been targeted at all. Their story connects the “assassination” incident with another murky case: the 1933 murder of Helmuth Unger. Alongside the history, I share a personal anecdote from 1999 that offers a modern-day parallel to Himmler’s own interpretation of events — highlighting how easily an accident can be misread as something more sinister when paranoia takes over. The video also includes: ► The forested landscape of the Schorfheide, filmed at the same time of year as the 1934 ceremony ► What remains today of Göring’s Carinhall estate ► The former site of Columbiahaus concentration camp ► Context on the run-up to the Night of the Long Knives ► How the foreign press (including Pariser Tageblatt and SPD exile reporting from Prague) covered the incident ► Why the German press remained silent until July 1934 This is a story of fear, propaganda, internal power struggles, misplaced suspicions and political murder, set against the backdrop of one of the most decisive moments in the rise of the SS. If you are interested in the interconnected biographies — Carin Göring, Rudolf Braschwitz, Bernhard Fischer-Schweder, and the destruction of Carinhall — I have dedicated videos to each of them on this channel. I publish full documentary videos every Friday and shorter daily videos from Poland and Germany showing what these historic locations look like today.
