SALT AND GLASS is a ritual chant-ballad inspired by the forging of Achilles’ shield: cities at peace, cities at war, harvest joy, and the ocean at the edge of all things—then the flash of mortality. Written in δεκαπεντασύλλαβος (15-syllable verse), echoing Greek oral song and rhapsodic storytelling. A maker builds a whole world in bronze… and the man who carries it never truly sees what he holds. The bronze remains. The man is gone. LYRICS The crippled god picked up his tongs and leaned into furnace light Smoke and copper stung the air; he breathed it deep into his chest The heat rose up and kissed his face—he did not flinch, did not rest He beat a disc of layered bronze—five skins to hold the world inside Salt and glass and salt and glass—the god made what was meant to last Salt and glass and salt and glass—the god made what was meant to last The shield was not for blocking blows—it carried worlds inside its face He carved a city held in peace—a bride walked trembling through the square The next city burned with siege—the wives watched husbands fall like rain He carved a vineyard drunk with grapes—dancers spun with flying hair A boy played lyre and sang of love; dust rose golden in the air He made the ocean last of all and wrapped it round the outer edge No ship has crossed that still sea—no oar, no sail, no human pledge Just water holding everything the way a mother holds the night Salt and glass and salt and glass—the god made what was meant to last Salt and glass and salt and glass—the god made what was meant to last The shield was not for blocking blows—it carried worlds inside its face Achilles never saw it whole—he saw it flash and then he died He never felt the heat or stars; never heard the dancing feet The god who forged it wept alone—bronze remains; the man is gone The stars still turn The shield outlasts us all #saltandglass #shieldofachilles #homer #iliad #hephaestus #greekmythology #ancientgreece #ancientgreek #mythology #epicpoetry #forging #anvil #bronze #phrygian #ritual #chant #incantation #darkfolk #neofolk #folkambient #darkambient #ambient #drone #dronemusic #soundscape #atmospheric #cinematic #experimental #experimentalmusic #poetry #songlyrics #spokenword #storyteller #mythicmusic #mythic #cosmic #fate #mortality #tragedy #ancientmyth #greekepic #achilleslegend #hephaestus #epictale
