From his upbringing, years working as a tailor, ascension to the vice-presidency and his controversial single term here are ten facts about one of America's most controversial presidents. This video discusses the personality and politics of Andrew Johnson (what is at least intended to be) a neutral perspective. While many consider him to be horrible president there is no doubt that Johnson had a hard life and was a strong fighter. His policies during Reconstruction have been discussed extensively by historians as have been his motivations which many find to be perplexing. This video will attempt to give a good summary of the important events in Johnson's life - those that molded him and those that molded the country. 0:00 Raised in Poverty 0:32 Aggressive Temprament 1:34 Tailor 2:18 Military Governor of Tennessee 3:19 Assassination of Abraham Lincoln 4:02 Recontruction 5:51 Swinging Around the Circle 7:28 Impeachment 8:14 Return to Senate and Death 8:46 Historical Reputation Andrew Johnson, born in 1808 in North Carolina, began life with some of the most humble beginnings of any United States president. His father died when he was only three and his mother and his stepfather were very poor. His family was considered white trash and Johnson's aggressive temprament got him into trouble on many occasions. At 15 Johnson ran away from home. At 18 he married and was well trained as a tailor. He'd use this profession to fund greater endeavors in life. He invested in real estate and at only 21 he became the Mayor of Greeneville, Tennessee. He'd rise up through the states offices. At the start of the Civil War he was a Senator for Tennesseee and the lone Southern Senator to support the Union. This made him a hated man by the Confederacy but an invaluable ally to Abraham Lincoln who appointed him as the state's military governor. While serving during the war Johnson often stayed in Nashville, the capitol under threat of capture. His loyalty helped to earn him a position as vice president, replacing Lincoln's Republican former running mate Hannibal Hamlin. He'd only serve as VP for a few months as Abraham Lincoln was killed by actor John Wilkes Booth shortly after the surrender of General Robert E. Lee. His reaction to Lincoln's assassination was one of fury. He paced back and forth repeating, "they shall suffer for this." President Andrew Johnson served as the seventeenth president from 1865 to 1869. His presidency was so controversial that it basically guranteed he wouldn't even be able to get his party's nomination. Johnson was widely criticized for his handling of Reconstruction and especially from Radical Republicans such as Thaddeus Stevens. The main criticisms were his leniency on the South, lack of provisions for newly freed slaves and passivity in dealing with violence that ensued in the post war era. This issues led to his controversial Swinging Around the Circle speaking tour and his eventual impeachment (though he was ultimately acquitted).
