Curious convection: experiment with surface tension and temperature changes

Watch this demonstration to build on the classic demonstration where you heat a crystal of potassium manganate(VII) in a beaker or convection tube. Instead, show how an ‘ice cube’ made from 0.02 M potassium manganate(VII) solution cube floats at the surface of the water and the water around it begins to sink, pulling tendrils of melting purple solution along with it. Extend the idea further and create beautiful patterns using kitchen ingredients, such as cream and coffee liqueur, and convection currents.
