RESIDENTS of the northern Ukrainian town of Bucha on Wednesday (April 6) recalled weeks of terror and destruction amidst shelling and occupation by Russian military forces. Kyiv and the West say there is evidence, including images and witness testimony gathered by Reuters and other media organisations, that Russia committed war crimes in Bucha. Bucha resident Anna, 39, who would only give her first name, said she went in and out of hiding. “I went out of the house amidst the shelling with my children. There were guys (Russian soldiers) in our yard who came in front us…. The moment Russian tanks arrived and we heard those sounds, we hid. It was scary. Even the sight of equipment scared us,” said Anna, while visiting a local playground with her daughters. As convoys of Ukrainian tanks drove through the streets and construction vehicles cleaned up shrapnel, residents like Valentyna said they wanted to resume their lives.
