Founder of Idealab Bill Gross covers his successes and failures starting companies. After starting up a few successful small companies and selling them off, he founded Idealab, a hands-on startup incubator where he's been personally involved in bringing up more than 150 companies. A mechanical engineer by training, these startups have ranged from a mirror-focused solar collector plant that melts salt, to a ridiculously streamlined electric vehicle, to a small robot that carried a Swiffer pad and got bought up by iRobot. Not every startup succeeds, of course, and the lessons learned from 60-something failed businesses are at least as informative as the successes.
