An Anthropological Linguistics Exploration of Names and Naming Conventions and Their Application to Translation Translation is a complex process that requires understanding the cultural meanings inherent in words, including personal names. Anthroponymy, the study of personal names and naming conventions, is crucial for understanding the identity of individuals and their culture. One can hardly claim to know a language if she does not know how to correctly use the language to address and refer to speakers of that language. Anthroponymy is a cross-disciplinary anthropological linguistics topic which requires input from both linguistics and anthropology. This presentation examines linguistic and cultural features of Bonggi personal names and illustrates how some of these features impact Scripture translation. The linguistic features described include noun classes, case marking, allomorphy, and vocative constructions, while the anthropological features referred to include naming taboos, nicknames, the use of kinship terms as personal names, teknonyms, and necronyms.
