Walter Lure was guitarist and vocalist in The Heartbreakers, one of the founding bands of New York punk, created by Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan after leaving the New York Dolls. After the Heartbreakers fell apart, Lure formed The Waldos, who became a steady presence in Lower East Side clubs, keeping the Bowery’s street-level rock & roll spirit alive. Their debut Rent Party dropped in 1995, and more than two decades later they returned with Wacka Lacka Loom Bop A Loom Bam Boo (2018), an album mixing fresh material with recharged versions of Heartbreakers staples like “London Boys” and “Take A Chance On Me,” all delivered with the same raw edge that defined Lure since the mid ’70s. Their significance as a direct bridge to the golden age of NYC punk was also highlighted in film: on the soundtrack for Room 37: The Mysterious Death of Johnny Thunders (2019), alongside cuts from the Dolls and the Heartbreakers, The Waldos were featured with tracks like “Crazy Kids” and “Damn Your Soul,” cementing their place as true torchbearers of the Bowery legacy. 🍺 Feeling generous?
