Every year, in one of Britain’s most bizarre traditions, locals throw themselves down a 650-foot hill in pursuit of a rolling wheel of Double Gloucester cheese. The rules are simple, if not downright absurd. From the top of the hill, a 7-9 pound (3-4 kilogram) round of Double Gloucester is hurled down a 200-yard slope, and the competitors chase after it, with the first person to reach the bottom declared the winner. And no, they don’t have to catch the cheese—good luck with that. It gets a one-second head start and rockets downhill at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour (110 km/h), making it more likely to knock you out than be caught. In 2013, they replaced the cheese with a foam replica for safety reasons, but the winner still gets to take home a real cheese. Oh, and if you fancy a pint before or after the madness, there are a couple of local watering holes nearby, including The Cheese Rollers pub in Shurdington, The Cross Hands and The Victoria in Brockworth.
