ENGLISH VERSION Dubliners is a collection of 15 stories published by James Joyce in 1914. The stories are set in Joyce's hometown, Dublin. In this masterpiece, the author managed to produce what was then called a topographical symphony of his hometown. The characters in the stories are weak and paralysed. The paralythis of Dubliners is one of the main themes in the work. In fact, they all seem incapable of escaping from their comfort zones. The style is objective, impersonal and unobtrusive. It is realistic and detailed even though Joyce did not like to be labelled as a realistic writer, mainly because his realistic descriptions behold deep symbolic meanings. The reader will have to interpret the message through personal implications. Joyce makes use of free direct speech, or free direct thought. The characters' thoughts are directly presented to the reader without the interference of the author himself. The stories have been categorized into 4 or 5 categories: childhood, adolescence, maturity, public life, and finally the Epilogue. Eveline is a teenager (she is 19 years old) and have the chance to change her life, by marrying Frank, the man she has fallen in love with. But while she is walking towards the boat to join Frank she has an Epiphany, the sound of an organ playing in the street brings back memories from the past. In particular, she remembers a promise she had made to her mum before her death, i.e. "To keep the home together". This epiphany will prevent Eveline from moving on and lead her to stay in Dublin instead of joining her beloved Frank. The Epilogue called The Dead is longer, denser, more experimental and more remarkable than the other stories. It anticipated Joyce's stream of consciousness technique.
