Nestled in the desolate beauty of the Karoo, the Yeomanry Hotel at Deelfontein stands as a haunting testament to a bold moment in history. During the Second Anglo-Boer War, this remote railway siding became home to the Imperial Yeomanry Hospital, a massive, purpose-built medical facility commissioned in 1900 to care for wounded soldiers. Backed by a charitable committee led by Lady Georgiana Curzon and Lady Chesham, the hospital was funded by enthusiastic public donations and quickly grew to accommodate up to 800 patients, housed in tents and prefabricated huts. Under the leadership of Alfred Downing Fripp (chief surgeon) and Major John Hall-Edwards (radiographer), the site became one of the first military hospitals to use X-ray technology in the field — a medical innovation that came at a price, as Hall-Edwards later suffered serious radiation injury. Over its short but intense existence, more than 6,000 men passed through its wards. Sadly, many lives were lost, mostly to typhoid and enteric fever, and today those men rest in two cemeteries near the hotel ruins. After the war ended, materials from the hospital huts were repurposed, and the Yeomanry Hotel itself was built to serve as a place for grieving relatives and visitors. Over time, the hotel and surrounding structures fell into ruin, leaving only faded foundations, an archway scarred with the name “Yeomanry,” and the echo of a once bustling wartime community. Today, the site is a powerful reminder of a forgotten chapter — where innovation, charity and sacrifice converged under the harsh Karoo sun. If you’re drawn to abandoned places, military history, or medical breakthroughs, this story of Deelfontein’s Yeomanry Hotel might just be one of the most evocative you’ll encounter. #deelfontein #SouthAfricaDroneFootage #SouthAfricaAerialViews #SouthAfricaTravel #SouthAfrica #HistoricSouthAfrica #CinematicDroneFootage #LensOverSouthAfrica #SouthAfricaFromAbove #DroneViewsOfSouthAfrica
