Gniew. Zamek krzyżacki cz.I. Castle of Teutonic Order. Part1.

The Gniew Castle is the mightiest fortress of the Teutonic order on the left bank of the Vistula River. Built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, it was the home of Teutonic commanders, and, in Polish times, the seat of starostas. Rebuilt many times in the 19th century (granary, prison), it finally burned in the Great Fire of 1921. In 1968-1974, “FAMA” Marine Machinery Works in Gniew began the first phase of the castle rebuilt. That phase was finished with laying ceilings over the last storey, making a roof structure and covering it with ceramic roofing tiles. In 1992, the City and Commune Council in Gniew, started the second phase of the castle rebuilt within public works. It consisted of making ceilings in the western and eastern wings, adaptation of interiors together with rebuilt of the chapel and tourist development of the Castle Hill. Performances and historical outdoor stagings and knight tournaments organized here from 1992 have caused the Gniew Castle to be recognized as one of main medieval tradition dissemination centres in Poland. Throughout the year there are organized conferences, conventions, scientific symposiums and banquets. What is more, the castle offers one- and several-days stays for organized teenage groups with “live history lessons”, a bonfire and with a visit of “the Gniew Castle Ghost”.
