"Romanian Folk Dances" is a suite for piano composed in 1915 by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók (1881-1945), later arranged by himself for small orchestra. This work is based on folk songs collected by Bartók in the Transylvania region of Romania (then part of Hungary) and is a representative piece that demonstrates the fusion of his ethnomusicological research and creative activities. The suite consists of six pieces made up of seven dances, each with its own unique rhythm and melody, musically depicting traditional Romanian dances while being sublimated into a new work through Bartók's characteristic use of rhythm and harmony. Like his other works, this piece requires performers to have high technical skill and deep musical understanding. However, its accessible melodies and rhythms are also very appealing to audiences, and it continues to be loved in many concert halls today. The performance time is just over 4 minutes for the piano version, and about 6 minutes for the orchestral version or the piano accompaniment version (arranged by Székely Zoltán), making its length easy to incorporate into concert programs, which also supports its popularity.
